There’s nothing better than getting cozy and watching a movie. Over the holidays especially, we love lighting a holiday scented candle, grabbing some treats, and cuddling up on the couch with a comfy blanket.
Watching dance movies gets us ready for the New Year and excited to try new classes. Here are some of our favourite dance movies on Netflix that we have cued up this year.
1. Save the Last Dance
This 2001 classic is a must-watch over the holidays. Who doesn’t remember practicing the signature dance in their room as a teenager? A teen named Sara gives up dancing after losing her mom, but when she meets a guy named Derek, she starts to process her loss through dance. And, they fall in love! Whether you haven’t seen it, or have seen it 100 times, this movie will warm your heart every time.
2. Honey: Rise Up and Dance
We all loved 2003’s Honey with Jessica Alba, and this one is a modern twist on the classic. This movie follows Skyler, an aspiring street dancer who is hoping to win a university scholarship for her dancing. Her family doesn’t approve, and the movie shows her working to prove them wrong. Inspiring and full of amazing dance moves, this one is so fun to watch.
3. Footloose
This newer version of a classic is just so fun to watch, with Julianne Hough as the main character – who can resist? Following two teenagers in a town where dancing is illegal, a revolution takes place that’ll have you dancing around the living room.
Time for a real classic! This 1987 movie is timeless, with Patrick Swayze and the iconic lift. No dance movie binge is complete without this one.
5. Dance Academy: The Comeback
A good ballet movie is such a joy to watch, and this one will have you on the edge of your seats. In this movie, we follow Tara who is trying to make it into the National Ballet Company after recovering from an injury. It’s full of beautiful dance scenes and emotions.
6. Bring It On
Cheerleading may not be your typical dance class, but dancing is a huge role in the art of cheer. Bring It On is a classic from 2000, and we couldn’t leave it off this list. Watch Kristen Dunst in one of her most memorable movies as she’s the captain of a cheer team attempting to win a national title. If you want to make an afternoon of it, there are other four sequels to Bring It On to watch on Netflix if you search the title.
7. Work It
A Netflix original, this movie follows a clumsy high school student as she attempts to get on the dance team to get into university. It’s funny, heartfelt, and a guaranteed feel good movie on a snow day.
Bonus: TV show to watch
Just released this month, this fictional thriller series might not be for the faint of heart. The show is about a star student who gets taken out by an attack, and the replacement who takes her place entering a world of lies and drama.
